Essay plan The transformation in the fortunes of the Nazi party in the years 193033 was largely because of Hitler's remarkable talents as a politician.' How far do you agree with this statement?
Hitler's political talents:

• Charismatic leader Hitler presented himself as a charismatic + powerful party leader.
His energetic, engaging + passionate speeches rallied support for the Nazis + many
came away from his speeches convinced of the Nazis' message + as firm supporters.

• Political cunning Shrewd political operator. Firmness in negotiations with Von Papen
that he would only accept Chancellorship ensured that this is the role he got. Lesser
politician might have crumbled + given in sooner, resulting in less power for the party.
Also skilfully used Schleicher's offer to Gregor Strasser in late 1932 to not only remove
Strasser (who epitomised the opposing LW faction of the Nazis) but his allies too.
Party reorganisation (Crafted and instigated by Hitler):

• Chaos into which Nazi party fell during his time in prison showed his indispensability to
the party.

• Refounding Hitler essentially refounded the party in Feb 1925, learning from errors +
recreated the party equipped for success. Political talents crucial here in terms of seeing the big picture, and realising the direction the party needed to move in, plus delivering the reforms.

• Legality New policy of legality + gaining power within the confines of the law a crucially
important, but sometimes unpopular, policy within party. Realised that needed to be seen
to be lawabiding, and he would never have been offered Chancellor in 1933 without this
policy, as it allowed Von Papen + Hindenburg to overlook SA misdeeds.

• Führerprinzip Führerprinzip established at the 1926 Bamberg party conference.
Important not only for absolute party control, but also in projecting an authoritarian +
powerful image, w/Hitler as the absolute + strong leader. This image played v.well in the
economic turmoil + concerns over the communists gaining powers in the early 30s, where stability was desired.

• Structure Party organised into regions (gaue) lead by Gauleiters. Strict hierarchy kept
order + obedience. BUT, at same time, Gauleiters given considerable freedom to run
political operations in their own areas, and tailor the Nazi message to the concerns of
their region. Goebbels and effective electioneering:
