The Democrats Largely support idea of big government:

Major responsibility in management of the economy o E.g. 2009 auto industry bailouts o E.g. 2009 Recovery Act to rescue American economy - $700b o E.g. 2009 Dodd-Frank Act regulated the finance industry and banks o E.g. 2011 passed higher fuel emissions standards for commercial vehicles o Associated with progressive taxation
 E.g. 2013 ended tax holiday for those earning over
$450,000 (joint house figure - 34% tax back up to 39%) o E.g. Obamacare o E.g. "Race to the top" education program o E.g. 2009 Lily Ledbetter Pay Act - equal pay for men and women o E.g. signed executive order for minimum wage to be raised to
$10.10 for all federal contractors

Generally socially liberal:


Committed to gun control More heavily pro-choice o Abortion rights o E.g. reversal of Mexico City policy, which meant government would not support pro-choice groups Feminism o E.g. Lily Ledbetter Pay Act 2009 Gay rights o 2012 run-up to election, President and Vice President showed support of gay marriage o E.g. Obama ended "don't ask, don't tell" policy, as there should be no discrimination against homosexuals (particularly in the military) Minority rights o E.g. 2010 Fair Sentencing Act, making sentences for crack and cocaine more similar o E.g. tried to pass the Dream Act on immigration reform, trying to find a way to grant citizenship for illegal immigrants
