The Republicans Desire for small government:

Reagan summed it up by saying "the nine most terrifying words in the English language are 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help'" Bush made big tax cuts for the rich Want to reform welfare o Want to knock off $6b worth of food stamps o Dependency culture vs rugged individualism Want to cut spending - deficit and debt Emphasis on federalism and rights of the individual o Would cut Obamacare - no Republicans voted for it o Republicans opposed Financial Stimulus Package in 2009 to bail out companies Norquist package - Republicans would not raise direct taxation

Socially conservative:

Tend to be pro-life and anti-abortion o Rand Paul said "there's no case for abortion even in the case of rape or incest" Defence of marriage o Should only be between a man and women o 11 states have now approved gay marriage Pro-guns

Foreign policy:

Hawkish Use of American power to promote and protect American interests and values Less room for diplomatic negotiation

Internal divisions:

Populist conservatives e.g. Tea Party o Stand for massive tax cuts
