French Literary Theory Notes
Like French Film, this is an introductory module, showing students a variety of writings by notable Frenchmen regarding their approaches to literature. My module included works by Sartre, Barthes, Valery and Genette, and I got consistently good marks bordering on a 1st overall.
It is a difficult module, especially for a first year student, but hopefully these notes (bulletpoints, sections on themes, style, context etc) and essays will make things a bit clearer than the language some of the texts are written in!
I never understood how this module would help me until I started focusing on particular authors in my final year, when I found myself remembering random bits and pieces from Barthes and running to the library to rediscover 'Critique et Verite' - it definitely looks good to quote some of these writers in later literary essays and final exams!
